The book’s opening evokes a stark kind of empathy for Eileen, who is extreme in her oddness and aversion to personal hygiene, but still quite likable. Eileen’s perspective is one of hindsight, some 50 years later, looking back on her final days of quiet, isolated misery before the rest of her life begins, a very different life we know will happen without knowing much more. She also spends a lot of time hating herself (“I looked like nothing special”) and plotting her exodus from the small New England town where she’s been trapped. In 1964, Eileen Dunlop is 24 years old, living with her cruel, alcoholic father, and working at Moorehead, a juvenile detention center for boys. Films have continued to be acquired in delayed deals, like Searchlight taking Jonathan Majors starrer Magazine Dreams and Sony Pictures Classic acquiring Randall Park’s directorial debut Shortcomings.Winner of both the Paris Review’s Plimpton Prize and a Stegner Fellowship, Moshfegh moves beyond her previous short fiction achievements with this dark and unnerving debut novel. Few deals were completed during the fest, the most notable being Netflix’s acquisition of Fair Play, Apple’s for Flora and Son, and Searchlight’s for Theater Camp. The deal was announced some two months after the close of the Sundance Film Festival.

WME Independent and Fifth Season negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmaker. Currently they are in production on Josh Oppenheimer’s musical The End, starring Tilda Swinton and George MacKay.

Neon release Triangle of Sadness recently received a best picture nomination at the this year’s Oscars, and the indie outfit is currently in theaters with Brandon Cronenberg’s Infinity Pool, which premiered at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals earlier this year. Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman, Stefanie Azpiazu, and Peter Cron produced, along with Luke Goebel and Moshfegh’s Omniscient Productions, and William Oldroyd. Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland and Owen Teague also star in Eileen, which hails from Likely Story and Fifth Season, the latter also having debuted title Flora and Son at the Park City fest, with that project landing at Apple.
